With significant players in attendance, Kenyatta Stewart launched his bid for the Democratic nomination for State Assembly in the 35th district on Sunday evening, saying his campaign is about transformation, opportunity, and community empowerment.

Stewart, the Newark corporation counsel and a close ally of Mayor Ras Baraka, will face Assemblyman Al Abdelaziz (D-Paterson), Passaic County Commissioner Orlando Cruz, and former Garfield Councilman Romi Herrera in a Democratic primary with office block ballots and no county organization line. Another incumbent, Shavonda Sumter (D-Paterson), is stepping down after fourteen years in the legislature.

“The 35th district deserves a representative who understands our struggles, who has lived them, and who will fight tirelessly to bring resources, jobs, and opportunities home,” Stewart stated. “I am ready to be that representative. I am ready to lead.”

Joining Stewart at his kickoff included: former Paterson Mayors Jeff Jones and Joey Torres; City Councilmembers Rudy Cotton, Michael Jackson and Luis Velez; Prospect Park Councilman Robert Artis; former Passaic County Commissioner T.J. Best; former Paterson Councilmen Bill McKoy and Anthony Davis; Paterson school board members Valerie Freeman and Corey Teague; and former Paterson school board members Manny Martinez, Nakema Redmond, Emanuel Capers, Kenny Simmons, and Christopher Irving.

Stewart also had a large contingent of Newark politicians present: Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-Newark), and City Councilmen Larry Crump and Pat Council.

“This is not just an election; this is a movement,” said Stewart. “The 35th district is a place of resilience and diversity, and our policies must reflect that. Every resident—whether a lifelong homeowner, a young professional, or a hardworking parent—deserves a representative who will fight for their future.”

Stewart promised economic growth for all, stronger partnerships between law enforcement and community members, improved public schools, renter protections as part of an affordable and inclusive housing plan, and enhanced infrastructure.
